Regional Initiatives

ENOVA – The first community owned energy retailer in Australia. Enova will buy and sell renewable energy at best prices and commit half of all profits to new community energy projects.

TYALGUM OFF THE GRID – This project is working to make Tyalgum the first Australian town independent of the fossil fuel energy grid.

TWEED SHIRE COUNCIL – The council has a dedicated sustainability program pushing local initiatives on recycling, energy efficiency, renewable energy and sustainable agriculture.

FARMING THE SUN – A program launched by Lismore Council where the community can jointly finance solar PV installations on council land and reap returns by selling renewable energy to the council.

REDUCING EMISSIONS- All councils in the northern rivers have instituted programs to reduce greenhouse emissions by increasing efficiency and building renewable energy. All have made impressive progress but some councils such as Tweed Shire face bigger hurdles with high energy demands for pumping water and sewerage.

CAR POOLING – The northern rivers car pooling web site helps commuters cut fuel costs and greenhouse gas emissions. Councils are also trying to improve public transport options.

BICYCLE TRAILS – Eddie Roberts from TweedCAN has been particularly successful in establishing new bike trails along lost horse postal routes connecting national parks, major tourist features and small towns.

DIVESTMENT – Byron and Lismore Councils have resolved to move their investment funds from institutions funding fossil fuels to banking institutions supporting renewable energy.
